English 8

Students remember that your syllabus needs to be signed and turned in by Monday, September 8. The writer's notebook needs to be decorated by your next block class this week (Sept. 9 or Sept. 10).

Narrative Writing: We are currently working in a narrative writing unit. Through daily quick writes and looking at examples of good narrative writing, we will be experimenting with voice, writing techniques and style. By the end of the week, students will start a story board for their narrative essay.

Reading: Students should be reading at outside of English class three times a week. This week we will start recording the times and places. Also, this week students will have their first status of class, where they present the book they are reading, current page number, and a brief description of what part they are at in their book.

Everyday Editing: Students will continue to observe and discuss sentence patterns, as well as distinguishing between telling and showing details.

Thoughts on Reading...

“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller

“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher

“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
