Reading Buddies
Mrs. Fredin’s eighth grade advisory class and Mr. Fredin’s fifth grade class team up in a reading program called “Reading Buddies.” As educators, we feel this program benefits both levels. The fourth graders will be mentored by an eighth grade student, and the eighth grade student will be able to use his/her knowledge to instruct the fourth grade student in many activities. We always begin the meeting time with paired reading and read for twenty minutes. Next, students fill out a reading log of the reading, answer occasional comprehension questions, and engage in discussions over the book.  Finally, the end of the meeting time may be spent with the eighth grade student leading the fourth grade student on one of the following:  spelling, vocabulary, multiplication facts, or other math activities. Reading Buddies meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:10-2:45.

Word Study Activities: Complete weekly work with word study activities every Friday.

Study Hall Tuesday: Students will have time to 1. Silent read for 15 minutes for English reading requirement. 2. Work on homework.

Career Passport & Career Cruising Work: Every Thursday students will work through the program and complete work on schoology and on Career Cruising. The work will be a grade in class and this information will follow you into high school. This is a program you gradually complete that helps you prepare for your future job or career.

Grading

2. Completion of novel study work.
3. Completion of Career Passport and Career Cruising Work.

Thoughts on Writing...

"As writers, we learn most of what we know just by
watching the pros, don't we?" ~John R. Trimble

“We need to teach our students to read like writers and
write like readers.” Kelly Gallagher

Thoughts on Reading...

“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller

“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher

“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
