Reading: Students will not have an April Reading Log, but still need to continue reading outside of class. Weekly, I will be conferencing with students on what they are reading, checking page numbers, and giving students a grade based on my notes from conferences. Students still are working towards their 12 book reading goal!
Grammar: Daily, I give students questions that test their knowledge on the rules we've learned this year on sentence structure, commas, and just writing in general. Students write down their responses in the first section of their writer's notebook.
Writing: We are studying op-eds in class by reading a different article each day, reflecting on what authors do in writing op-eds. Students then complete a quick write in their writer's notebooks, second section; students reflect on the article or give an opinion on the topic.
Literature Studies: This week we will be continuing to read selections from our literature book. Homework questions will be handed out on Tuesday and Thursday over the reading.
Field Trip: On Wednesday, April 16th, 8th grade students passing all of their classes in the third marking period and not receiving a referral will be attending a "team-building" field trip to the Kettenun Center. Students need to pay two dollars to their 5th hour teacher and bring a sack lunch on the day of the trip.
Explore Testing: 7th/8th grade students will be taking the Explore Test on Wednesday, April 23rd, in the morning. A breakfast will be provided for all 7th/8th grade students taking the test. It's VERY important that students take this test seriously and do their best.
End-of-the-year Field Trip: Thursday, June 5th is the Michigan's Adventure Field Trip. (Remember students you can not receive any referrals from April 7 through June 5 to be qualified to attend this trip, and students you must be passing all of your classes by June 5th to attend the trip!)

Thoughts on Writing...
"As writers, we learn most of what we know just by
watching the pros, don't we?" ~John R. Trimble
“We need to teach our students to read like writers and
write like readers.” Kelly Gallagher

Thoughts on Reading...
“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child
“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller
“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher
“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
