Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry- Students should be read through chapter 10. Next week we will finish reading the novel and take the test over the novel and unit.
Argumentative Writing- Today we continued writing our argument on the topic: Do you think racial problems will improve in the United States, or do you think racial problems will become worse in the United States?
Next week we will finish this essay. Some of the key lessons in this unit have been discussing the difference between a persuasive essay and an argumentative essay, how to write a counter argument, and reviewing how to cite direct quotes from our research.
I challenge students to continue working on researching their topic over the weekend, and continue working on writing their essay.
Field Trip: Michigan's Adventure- The 8th grade class will be taking the end of the year field trip on Monday, June 3. To be eligible to go, students must be passing all classes, and not have received a referral in the fourth marking period. We will be sending home a note next week informing of time and price of the trip.
Have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day Weekend!

Thoughts on Writing...
"As writers, we learn most of what we know just by
watching the pros, don't we?" ~John R. Trimble
“We need to teach our students to read like writers and
write like readers.” Kelly Gallagher

Thoughts on Reading...
“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child
“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller
“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher
“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
