English 8

English 8- February 1-February 6

Grammar/Mechanics: Students have been working through a punctuation packet, where they have been working on commasemi-colon, and colon rules. This week we will finish the packet, working on using an ellipsis in writing, as well as understanding when to use a hyphen and dash in writing. In addition, we will work with documentation of titles. There will be a test over the packet on Friday, February 6.

Literature Study: This week we will begin reading the dramatization of The Diary of Anne Frank in our literature book. We will be studying the historical background, as well as applying our literary vocabulary learned previously this year to the reading.

Informational Reading/Writing: On our block-scheduled day, students will read an informational article and complete comprehension questions over the reading. Also, students will complete two written expressions over the informational text, including detailed support from the article to support their responses.

Novel Reading: On our block-scheduled day this week, we will have "Status of the Class" and each student will share current book, page number, and a little about what part of the book they are currently at in their book. Each week, I'm tracking student progress in their books instead of having a reading log. Students are working toward reading 12 books this year from many different genres.

Thoughts on Writing...

watching the pros, don't we?" ~John R. Trimble

write like readers.” Kelly Gallagher

Thoughts on Reading...

“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller

“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher

“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
