English 8
Reading: Students will not have a May Reading Log, but still need to continue reading outside of class. Weekly, I will be conferencing with students on what they are reading, checking page numbers, and giving students a grade based on my notes from conferences. Students still are working towards their 12 book reading goal!
Writing: We just concluded our study on op-ed writing. The Op-ed writing pieces were due by last Friday. We are currently working towards producing another writing piece. The next writing assignment is a choice writing piece. Students can choose their topic and genre. This week we are noting what authors do that makes writing interesting, and what makes a "good" book and "good" writing. We will be studying author's writing and completing quick writes in our writer's notebook.
Literature Studies: This week we will read to the end of chapter 4 Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.
Quiz: A quiz will be given on Thursday over chapters 1-3 and notes.
End-of-the-year Field Trip: Thursday, June 5th is the Michigan's Adventure Field Trip. (Remember students you can not receive any referrals from April 7 through June 5 to be qualified to attend this trip, and students you must be passing all of your classes by June 5th to attend the trip!)

Thoughts on Writing...
"As writers, we learn most of what we know just by
watching the pros, don't we?" ~John R. Trimble
“We need to teach our students to read like writers and
write like readers.” Kelly Gallagher

Thoughts on Reading...
“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child
“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller
“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher
“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
