English 8

Today in class we read "Gift of the Magi," and then started working on the story handout. We established that a good claim inferred from the theme would be "There is no greater gift than love." Students started finding textual evidence from the story to support this theme. Since I provided a handout of the story, this assignment will not be homework, and we will finish up the work tomorrow in class.

The Author We Learned About Today:
William Sydney Porter, known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings.

Thoughts on Reading...

“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller

“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher

“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
