English 8

This week in class we have been working in our literary unit. We have been reading many stories from our literature book and working with the following "I Can Statements":


  1. I can identify theme and use two examples from the plot to illustrate the theme.
  2. I can explain with examples from the book how two of the characters in the book live out the theme.
  3. I can identify the setting in a piece of literature.
  4. I can show how the setting helps show the theme in literature.
  5. I can choose something a character said from a piece of literature that produced action in the plot.
  6. I can choose a character from a piece of literature that taught or showed something about another character.
  7. I can choose something a character said in a piece of literature that produced a decision in a piece of literature.
  8. I can identify the mood in a piece of literature and give details from a piece of literature to show the mood.
9.     I can identify the viewpoint a plot is told from and give the effect it had on the reading experience.
10. I can learn how different viewpoints of characters through dramatic irony can create effects such as suspense or humor.
11.  I can determine meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings.
12. I can analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.
13. I can analyze the impact of specific word choices as analogies or allusions to other texts.
14. I can compare and contrast the structure of two texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style.
