English 8

Everyday Editing:
What do you notice about this sentence:
“You’ll never believe what it’s like to take a sailboat on the waters of Lake Michigan unless you try it yourself,” I said to my friends.

Lesson:
   1. We went over the rubric and writing qualities of narrative writing.
   2. Then we went to the lab and worked on typing our rough draft.
   3. Tomorrow students will continue typing a rough draft, and at the end of the hour, print off what they have done so far, so I can read all drafts over the weekend and offer helpful input.
4. Monday we will continue working in the computer lab on this piece.

Thoughts on Reading...

“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller

“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher

“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
