Welcome Back to School!!

Can you believe school is starting on Tuesday? I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! Students, I can't wait to share with you some of my summer adventures, hear how you spent your summer, and share with you some great realistic fiction novels! English 8 students, if you are doing some shopping over the weekend and you didn't keep your binder from Mrs. Sikkema's class, please pick up a 2" binder. Also, I'm strongly recommending each student purchase a flash drive to help transport writing drafts from school to home. Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday!! Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Thoughts on Reading...

“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

“I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's.” ― Donalyn Miller

“Deeper comprehension is more likely to occur when we
discuss our reading with others.” Kelly Gallagher

“A critical reader in the classroom makes for a discerning
reader outside of the classroom.” Kelly Gallagher
